Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. - Playing in its third road game in six days, the Calvin women's soccer team dug down to find enough energy to gain a 0-0 double-overtime tie at rival Hope Monday night at Van Andel Stadium.
With the victory, Calvin completes an unbeaten MIAA regular season at 14-0-2 in conference play while also moving to 16-2-2 overall. The Knights currently have an 18-game unbeaten streak and are now 3-0-2 in overtime games this year.
Thanks to a 1-0 win at Olivet on Saturday, Calvin entered Monday's rivalry matchup having already clinched the MIAA regular season title and the top seed for this week's MIAA Tournament.
The first half was played tight to the vest as both teams held deep defensive lines and probed sparingly on offense. Hope held a 3-0 shots at goal advantage through the opening 45 minutes.
The tempo picked up in the second half with each team firing five shots at goal. Hope (15-2-3 overall, 12-1-3 MIAA) came close to scoring off a corner kick early in the second half but Calvin goalkeeper Holly Ellerbroek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) came up with a clutch save.
Minutes later, Calvin junior Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian HS) made a dangerous run into the Hope box but was turned aside and with 16:30 left in regulation, a header attempt by senior Christina Drost (Denver, Colo./Denver Christian HS) was just off the mark.
With just under 12 minutes remaining, a Hope header off a direct free kick was saved by Ellerbroek. Calvin received two direct free kicks from distance and came up with two quality scoring opportunities but both chances were denied.
In the first overtime, Veenstra again just missed with a shot from the top of the box. Hope had a glorious opportunity midway through the second overtime but Ellerbroek came up with one of the plays of the game as she parried a shot taken by Elizabeth Perkins just wide of the far post with a leaping stab.
Calvin came up with one additional shot in the closing two minutes of overtime but Hope goalkeeper Mary Clare Theis was able to come up with the save.
The result marked the second 0-0 double-overtime time between the two rivals who have now played 220 minutes of scoreless soccer this fall.
Hope helpd a 9-7 shots at goal advantage. Ellerbroek had four saves for the Knights in posting her eighth shutout of the season.
"I think this game showed the mental toughness of our team," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "We were coming off an emotional hard-fought victory at Olivet on Saturday to clinch our league championship and we found a way to come up with enough energy to get a result tonight against an excellent team on the road. I think this game showed the quality of players on both sides of the field tonight. Our challenge now is to regroup and rest some tired bodies before Thursday. Playing this type of league schedule takes a toll on the players. There's no way around it but it is what it is and we'll move forward and get ready for Thursday."
Calvin will host Olivet on Thursday in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at 3 p.m. at Zuidema Field. Olivet battled Kalamazoo to a double-overtime 0-0 tie Monday night. Calvin defeated Olivet twice this year, winning 3-1 at Calvin and 1-0 at Olivet.
