Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin volleyball advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday. The Knights swept the Pointers, 26-24, 25-12, and 25-18. The win improves Calvin to 30-3 on the year. UW-Stevens Point finishes the year at 27-9.
"I was really happy with how we came out tonight," said head coach Amber Warners. "I thought we had a lot of focus and we were very aggressive with our serving, which was our goal. Before that I would really like to congratulate Abby and Stevens Point, for a great season and she has a really classy program and does a wonderful job."
The Pointers threw everything they had at Calvin in the first set. With the set tied at 11, UW-Stevens Point would take the next three points to take a 14-11 lead. The Pointers would control the set until 18-15. The Knights would take control from there, going on a 5-0 run behind the serve of senior Jamie Kooiman (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene). With Calvin leading 22-21, the Pointers would go on a 3-0 run to take a 24-22 lead. The Knights would respond with a 4-0 behind the serve of sophomore Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian), the run ended with senior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) finishing the set with a kill, to take the set, 26-24.
The Knights cruised in the second set, with the set tied at eight, Calvin would go on a 17-4 run to finish the set. The run was highlighted by the serve of sophomore Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron). Vyletel served up trouble for the Pointer defense, tallying two aces in the 5-0 run. Calvin would take the set, 25-12.
The third set has highlighted by two Calvin runs. With the set tied at 10, the Knights would go on a 4-0 behind the serve of Jenna Lodewyk. The Knights would pull away at 16-12 on a 8-3 run to lead, 24-15. Senior Rachel Lubben (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) tallied final kill of the night to give Calvin a 25-18 victory.
Maggie Kamp led the team on Friday with 14 kills. Jenna Lodewyk had 37 assists in the win, freshman Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) finished with 18 digs. Both sophomore Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto District Christian). Kristen Vyletel had a career-high three aces. The Knights hit .227 on Friday, with Stevens Point hitting .047.
Calvin will host Carthage on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Van Noord Arena in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
