Box Score KALAMAZOO - The Calvin women's soccer team remains on top of the MIAA standings after a 1-0 double-overtime victory at Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon.
Senior Taylor TenHarmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) netted the game-winning goal with just 1:36 left in the second overtime to lift the Knights (12-2-1 overall, 11-0-1 MIAA) to the victory.
TenHarmsel's goal came in the closing minutes of overtime as she swept through midfield, collected a long service, took a pair of dribbles and delivered a shot on the ground from right to left that snuck inside the far post to give the Knights the dramatic win.
The goal by TenHarmsel was her second overtime winner of the year as she also scored in overtime in a 1-0 win at Adrian on September 19.
"It was a great team victory," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "We just kept attacking and remained patient. Taylor came up with the big play in the same fashion. She didn't panic. She collected the served ball, saw the target and made a perfect shot. We are excited to come out of her with a win."
Calvin finished the game with a 23-6 shots at goal advantage including 12-3 in the second half and 6-1 in the two overtime sessions.
Senior Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) had five shots and junior Brianna Russell (Plainwell/Thornapple-Kellogg HS) seven shots.
"Our strikers had several waves of attacks and I think we started to wear down their defense," said Recker. "Once Kalamazoo's defense tired, Taylor was able to slip out of the midfield for that game-winning goal."
Senior Holly Ellerbroek (Holland/Holland Christian HS) came up with the shutout in goal for the Knights, collecting six saves.
Calvin is back in action next Wednesday when it hosts Adrian at 4 p.m.
