Box Score Calvin stretched its unbeaten streak to 35 games with a 2-0 victory over the visiting Alma Scots Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field. Ranked third nationally, Calvin improves to 14-0-1 overall and to 10-0-0 in the MIAA. The Knights have won 30 straight MIAA regular season games and hold a six-point lead over Kalamazoo with four league games left to play.
Calvin picked up first half goals from senior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) to gain the win.
Pruis gave Calvin a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of play, heading in his fifth goal of the season off a well-placed crossing pass from freshman Trent Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS).
With just over two minutes remaining in the first half, Hooker ripped a shot from 15 yards out in the lower left hand corner after being set up a perfectly placed pass on the ground by freshman Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Calvin continued to maintain possession the rest of the way and kept the Scots (9-4-1 overall, 6-3-1 MIAA) off the scoreboard as the Knights posted their 10th shutout of the season.
Senior Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Augustine Catholic HS) was credited with the shutout in goal for the Knights, collecting two saves.
Calvin held a 19-10 shots at goal advantage.
"We're very pleased with the result," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "I've said this before and I'll say it again but Alma is a vastly improved team. It was important to get an early goal to help establish the tempo. Once we got the lead, we were able to possess the ball and force Alma to chase. We're taking it one game at a time right now. We still have several difficult games to play in our league."
Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts Olivet at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
