Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. - The fourth-ranked Calvin men's soccer team remains unbeaten after a 5-0 conference victory at Trine University Saturday afternoon.
The Knights scored four goals in the first half and cruised from that point on to register their 33rd consecutive result without a defeat.
Calvin (12-0-1 overall, 8-0-0 MIAA) pressed the attack early with a pair of goals from senior Sam Hanover (St. Johns/St. Johns HS) just 36 seconds apart. Hanover's first goal came on a feed from sophomore Mitch Stark (South Lyon/South Lyon HS) that led to a breakaway with just 9:58 elapsed. Just seconds later, Hanover got loose on another breakaway goal, this time on a pass from junior Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS).
In the 19th minute, senior Nick Groenewold (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS) tapped in a shot after senior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had headed a pass right to Groenewold's feet.
Hooker then got into the scoring act in the 22nd minute, heading in a long serve in the box from junior teammate Isky VanDoorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS) to put the Knights up 4-0.
Sophomore Micah Beard (Otsego/Otsego HS) completed the scoring in the 74th minute, heading in a corner kick from sophomore Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth/Frankenmuth HS). The goal was the team-leading eighth of the year for Beard who has now scored a goal in four consecutive games for the Knights.
Senior Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Augustine Catholic HS) was strong once again in nets, collecting three saves for his eighth shutout of the season and the 20th of his Calvin career.
Calvin outshot Trine 18-12 and held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
"It was a good road win against a team we struggled with at home the first time around this year," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "I was pleased with our ball movement on offense. From the defensive side of things, I'm always happy when we come away with a shutout."
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to rival Hope for a conference match at VanAndel Stadium at 8 p.m.
