Women's Basketball Breaks Away for 73-60 Win at Kalamazoo

Box Score

KALAMAZOO - The nationally-ranked Calvin women's basketball team remained unbeaten on the season with a hard-fought 73-60 victory at Kalamazoo College Wednesday night at the Anderson Athletic Center.

Calvin improves to 15-0 overall and finishes the first half of the league schedule with an 8-0 conference mark.

Kalamazoo (9-7 overall, 4-4 MIAA) kept the pace with Calvin early, trailing 29-26 with just over four minutes remaining in the first half. The Knights closed out the half on a 9-4 run however to take a 38-30 halftime lead.

Calvin stretched its lead to double-digits early in the second half on back-to-back triples by senior Breanna Verkaik and junior Abby Springer. Calvin's lead ballooned to 19 at 60-41 on a three-pointer by sophomore Anna Timmer with just over eight minutes remaining.

Kalamazoo cut the deficit down to 11 points with just over three minutes remaining but got no closer as the Knights sealed the win.

Calvin finished with a 50-36 rebounding advantage and connected on 11 three-point field goals including 7 of 18 in the second half.

Junior Kally Verkaik scored a career-high 19 points on the strength of five three-point field goals while sophomore Anna Timmer matched a career scoring high with 19 points while also ripping down eight rebounds. Senior Hannah Acre also had a big night with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds while senior Breanna Verkaik had 10 points and five assists. Senior Kayla Engelhard also had seven rebounds and four assists.

"We knew that Kalamazoo would come after us hard and they did," said Calvin head women's basketball coach John Ross. "Kalamazoo is a program on the rise and we knew that we would have to be ready. I was most pleased with our rebounding. We came up with 17 offensive rebounds and we hit some big three-point shots in the second half. It's a good feeling anytime you can get a conference win on the road - particularly against a quality opponent like Kalamazoo."

Calvin will now prepare for a weekend slate of non-conference games at home. The Knights will host Rochester College (Mich.) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and then host Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday at 6 p.m.
