Calvin Women's Basketball Remains Unbeaten with 76-53 Win at Alma

ALMA - The nationally-ranked Calvin women's basketball team improved to 12-0 on the year including 5-0 in the MIAA with a 76-53 victory over Alma College Saturday afternoon at Alma's Art Smith Arena.

Calvin jumped out to a 30-6 lead and led 37-23 at halftime. The Calvin lead then ballooned to 30 points in the second half at 71-41 and the Knights never looked back.

Calvin was led in scoring by senior Breanna Verkaik who tossed in 18 points while sophomore Anna Timmer had 17 points. Freshman Ali Spayde had a career-high 10 points while seniors Hannah Acre and Kayla Engelhard had eight points apiece.

Alma was led in defeat by Mallory Pruett with 14 points while Grace Wheeler had 11 points.

Calvin went 25 for 34 at the free throw (.735) and forced Alma into 28 turnovers.

"I think we came ready to play and that was good," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross. "Anytime we can get a win on the road in this league we will take it. We had a number of players contribute and that was also good to see. We need to continue to maintain our intensity as we have a tough stretch of games ahead of us."

Calvin will host Saint Mary's on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
