Box Score ROCK ISLAND, IL - The Calvin women's soccer team opened its 2014 campaign on a winning note, defeating Webster University 3-2 Friday afternoon in a game played on the campus of Augustana College (IL).
Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game as junior Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) scored in the 10th minute and sophomore Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) followed with a goal just 36 seconds later off a feed from junior Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS).
Webster answered with goals in the 17th and 42nd minutes to tie the game 2-2 leading into halftime.
In the 57th minute, freshman Camie Rietberg (Wyoming/Calvin Christian HS) scored unanssisted to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.
Ranked 24th nationally, Calvin held on from there to gain the win.
Calvin held a 14-6 shots at goal advantage. Freshman Jenna Shelton (Bloomfield Hills/Troy Intersect HS) picked up his first collegiate win in goal, recording one save.
Calvin is back in action on Saturday, facing Augustana at 2:30 p.m. (EDT).
