Box Score

By Gina de Haan

The Knights hosted the Trine Thunder on Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena in their second meeting of the season. The fifth-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team ended Trine's six-match win streak, sweeping the Thunder 25-19, 25-20, 25-18.

Sophomore Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) led the Knights with 13 kills while hitting .476; Danhoff also had three block assists. Maggie Kamp (Orland Park IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a stellar all-around performance, collecting 10 kills and contributing 11 digs. Sophomore Kelly Bos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) added seven kills.

Freshman setter Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) dished out 27 assists, eight digs and two service aces. Senior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) recorded 20 digs along with 2 service aces. Stacey Kamp had three block assists. Freshman Emily Blankespoor provided 10 digs for the Knights.

Calvin's coach, Amber Warners, was impressed with the steadiness that her team played with. "We played with a lot of passion, fire and energy last night." (Calvin defeated Albion Friday night 25-15, 25-14, 25-11 at Kresge Gymnasium) "It's hard to carry that high level of energy over to the next day, but I think we played with consistency. We have been working on having a 'short memory' after we make mistakes, and I think we did a good job with that tonight." Coach Warners also credited the team's success mainly to their solid defense and passing.

Calvin is now 17-3 overall and 9-1 in the MIAA while Trine is 13-3 overall and 6-3 in the MIAA. The Knights remain in second place in the league while the Thunder also hold their spot in third place.

The Knights hope to add to their four-match win streak on Friday, October 10 when they host Wheaton (Ill.) at 2 p.m. in their first game of the Calvin Midwest Invitational. Later that night, at 7 p.m., Calvin will match up against the DePauw Tigers.
