#1 ranked Calvin volleyball team rolls to big victories at Wittenberg Fall Classic

SPRINGFIELD, OH - The top-ranked Calvin women's volleyball continued to roll, defeating sixth-ranked Washington University of St. Louis and regional power Heidelberg University in a pair of three-set matches at the Wittenberg Fall Classic on Friday. Calvin defeated Washington University late in the afternoon by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 26-24. Later Friday night, Calvin topped Heidelberg 25-17, 25-13, 25-19.

Calvin's match against Washington University featured a pair of recent national champions as Washington University was the 2009 NCAA III champion while Calvin claimed the 2010 NCAA III title.

Calvin roared through the opening two sets, hitting .407 in set one and .350 in set two. The Bears (8-2 overall) stiffened in set three however, building a 23-22 lead and then a 24-23 advantage with a chance to serve for the set. The Knights rallied for three consecutive points, using a kill from sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS), an attack error by the Bears and a match-ending service ace by senior Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Maggie Kamp finished with a match-high 16 kills to go with 11 digs. Junior Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS) also had a big match with eight kills while senior Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) had six kills apiece. Danhoff had four block assists as Calvin tallied seven team blocks in the match. Rietema also did a good job of serving as the quarterback of the Calvin offense with 33 assists. Zietse had 16 digs in the back row while junior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) had a fine all-around performance with 10 digs, three assists and one service ace.

The victory was Calvin's fourth this year against a top-25 nationally-ranked opponent this fall.

In the win over Heidelberg, Calvin hit .302 as a team and received significant contributions from junior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN, Mishawaka Penn HS) who tallied 11 kills and a .421 attack percentage. Maggie Kamp had 12 kills and seven digs. Rietema had 35 assists, eight kills and eight digs. Zietse had 14 digs while Biesboer had three service aces.

Calvin will prepare for two matches on Saturday, facing the College of Mount St. Joseph at 2 p.m. and eighth-ranked Otterbein University at 6 p.m.
