Calvin defeats Alma

Box Score

Looking to bounce back from its first conference loss of the season, the Knights men's soccer team hosted the Scots of Alma College Wednesday afternoon. After a scoreless first half, Calvin scored three goals in the second half, two from freshman Stephan Hooker, to earn a 3-0 victory.

In the 31st minute, Calvin saw a good opportunity on net from sophomore Sam Hanover that was saved by Alma keeper Graham Wallace.

The Knights continued to pressure the Scots goal, but, despite a 9-1 shots advantage in the first half, the game was goalless at the break.

After halftime, Calvin broke through in the 62nd minute. Freshman Stephan Hooker received a pass from junior Sean Broekhuizen at the top of the box and found the bottom left corner of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

Hooker added a second goal in the 76th minute off a corner kick. The ball was played in by sophomore Taylor Pruis to junior Travis Vegter, who let the ball roll through his legs to Hooker. Expecting the initial shot from Vegter, Alma's defense was not ready for the blast from Hooker as he found the back of the net for the second time, giving Calvin a 2-0 advantage.

The Knights added a third and final goal in the 88th minute as Pruis dribbled down onto the end line and found senior Zach Willis in the middle of the box for the third goal and a 3-0 victory.

Calvin held a 24-6 advantage in shots at the end of the game. Junior keeper Andrew Claucherty made two saves and punched out a number of dangerous crosses to earn the clean sheet in goal.

"I was really proud of our guys, we stayed committed to the way that we play," said head coach Ryan Souders. "We asked them to do a job today and they did it. We stayed committed to it, and when we got the chances in the second half, guys finished them, and that makes a difference."

The Knights improve to 6-4-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the MIAA while Alma drops to 7-3-0 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.

Calvin's next contest is scheduled for Saturday when it will travel to Albion to face the Britons. Saturday's game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
