Calvin defeats Adrian

Box Score

Responding to last Saturday's 3-0 loss at Dominican, the Knights took their conference and home opener convincingly on Tuesday, defeating Adrian by a score of 5-0.

Calvin established possession early and looked effortless in peppering Bulldogs freshman keeper James Ruby from the onset. In the 18th minute, the Knights got on the board off a well-executed set piece.

Junior Chris Nance lined up to take a corner kick with freshman Dino Duratovic as a short option. Nance touched the ball to Duratovic, who settled it for Nance to play a cross. Junior Joe Broekhuizen then used his head to redirect the ball into the back netting and give the Knights the only goal they'd need. The shot was one of 20 Calvin concluded the first half with. The Knights managed to outshoot the Bulldogs by a margin of 18 in the first half.

The second half brought continued lasting possession, but more so goals for the Knights, whose dynamic attack took varied dangerous manifestations. Less than three minutes into the half, senior Miles Colago flicked in a header off a deep throw-in from sophomore Nick Holtrop. Later, in the 66th minute, Holtrop set up freshman Zach Willis with a tap-in after another deep, lofted throw.

Freshman Travis Vegter also scored his second goal of the young season off a cross lasered in from classmate Alex Goorhouse. Goorhouse contributed another assist in the 73rd minute when he factored in a one-touch give-and-go with Willis.

Coach Chris Hughes recognized the Knights' ability to go deep in the bench as a crucial factor in the game. Twenty-one players saw the field of play, and eight of them recorded either a goal or an assist.

"We were able to sub quite deeply today," he said. "That gives confidence to the coaching staff and players alike, but it's also difficult on the other team because they often don't know what to expect."

The victory advances the Knights overall record to 3-2, with a 1-0 mark in conference. The Knights host rival Wheaton on Friday at 4 p.m.
