Calvin defeats Olivet

Box Score

The Calvin College men's soccer team came to Olivet's Cutler Athletic Complex with the second most points in the MIAA. Calvin's opponent, the 23rd-ranked Olivet Comets, were sitting atop the MIAA. In a showdown for first place, Calvin defeated Olivet 3-0 to forge a tie for first place in the MIAA standings with the Comets. Both teams are now 5-1-0 in league play, five points ahead of Hope and Trine.

In their victory over Olivet, the Knights dominated from the start. Olivet played back, allowing Calvin to control possession. Around the 17th minute, Olivet's freshmen defender Zach Piotrowski had his pocket picked by Calvin junior Chris Nance and nearly scored as his shot hit the post.

The early scoring opportunity fueled the Knights even more. In the 31st minute, Calvin earned a corner kick. Sophomore Ben Honeycutt took the kick, aimed at senior Tyler Vegter. Vegter headed the ball down to junior Nick Holtrop. The former Unity Christian standout half-volleyed the ball rocketing it into the upper left corner of the net. The Knights took this one goal advantage into halftime.

Just like the second half against Albion, Calvin capitalized early on in the second half. In the 51st minute, freshmen Dino Duratovic connected with Zach Willis. Willis buried the ball farside. Just four minutes later, the same combination hooked up in reverse. Willis found Duratoic streaking down the right sideline. Duratovic then rolled a shot off the far post and in.

Calvin outshot Olivet 25-8 in the game. Junior Mike Dolan recorded three saves in a shutout victory.

"We had some trouble early in the year keeping the ball out of the back of our net. We've started to figure that out. On offense, we have found a groove. " Calvin head coach Chris Hughes commented after the match.

Calvin (9-3-0) returns to action Saturday when it plays host to the Scots of Alma at 2:30 p.m.
