On a beautiful sunny day at Calvin's Zuidema Field the nationally-ranked Knights scored seven goals en route to their 10th victory of the season.
Calvin wasted no time in taking control, scoring four goals in the first fifteen minutes of the game.
Justin Ahearne (Hudsonville, MI) scored a hat-trick in those first fifteen minutes of the game, all on the receiving end of Calvin set pieces from senior Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH).
"I thought we found some good stuff today and you look to build on that," Coach Chris Hughes said. "We're excited and it's always good to score goals." "Corner kicks and set pieces are important to any team," Hughes said of the team's success with set pieces. "You have to take advantage of them, and Ahearne had a good day."
The Knights outshot Albion 21-7 over the course of the match, with 11 of Calvin's shots being on target and seven of those finding the net. Calvin scored four goals in that initial fifteen minute period, allowing Hughes to substitute freely in order to rest players that needed it. Aside from Ahearne's early hat trick, Calvin goals came from senior Brad Heethuis (Jenison, MI) in the 9thh minute, junior Tyler Vegter (Hudsonville, MI) in the 49th minute, sophomore Nick Holtrop (Hudsonville, MI) in the 57th minute, and sophomore Chris Nance (Washington, MI) in the 60th minute.
Aside from Kmetz's three assists to Ahearne in the first half, Holtrop and senior Scott Hooker (Hudsonville, MI) also both finished with two assists apiece.
Senior Ryan Bratt (Silver Spring, MD) left early to get some extra rest as the Knights already led by a good margin, and so sophomore Michael Dolan (Casco, MI) filled in for the rest of the game, tallying a save and sharing the clean sheet with Bratt.
"I thought we possessed well and had good opportunities offensively," said Hughe. "Overall the depth is very important." The win pushes Calvin's overall record to 10-1-1 and 4-1-1 in the MIAA, keeping the Knights on top of the conference standings. The next action for the Knights will be an away contest at Trine on October 12th.
