Calvin ties with Trine

The see-saw MIAA men's soccer race took another twist on Tuesday as Calvin tied Trine 1-1 Tuesday afternoon. The tie drops Calvin out of sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings and into second place, two points behind Kalamazoo (5-2-0 MIAA) which defeated Albion 3-0 on Tuesday.

Calvin (4-1-2 MIAA) holds a one-point lead over third place Adrian, Olivet and Trine which are all 4-2-1 on the year.

Calvin got on the board in the 54th minute on a goal by senior Lucas Wilgenburg on shot off a corner kick play. Trine came back to tie the game five minutes later however and neither team would score again. Calvin nearly took the lead in the closing minutes of regulation as junior back Justin Ahearne headed the ball off a long throw-in that appeared headed for the back of the net. Trine goalkeeper Nick Thon came up with a leaping save to prevent the go-ahead goal.

Calvin finished with a 16-15 shots at goal advantage. Trine outshot Calvin 11-7 in the first half but Calvin outshot the Thunder 5-4 over the next 45 minutes and 4-0 in the two overtime sessions.

Calvin goalkeeper Ryan Bratt had five saves for Calvin while Thon had eight saves for Trine in the contest.
