Calvin defeated 12th-ranked Kenyon 1-0 Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament and in the process, captured the tournament championship for the first time since 2006 and for the fourth time overall.
Senior Alex McKenzie (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch HS) scored the only goal of the game in the 47th minute of play, redirecting a cross from senior Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) into a wide-open goal.
The match was an evenly-played contest as both teams finished with 12 shots apiece.
Calvin sophomore Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) was superb for Calvin in nets, recording five saves including a pair of key stops on throwins into the box in the second half.
Calvin is now 3-1-0 overall and will face Otterbein next Friday night in a tournament hosted by Wittenberg University next Friday.
