Calvin falls to Wheaton

For the second consecutive day, Calvin played in stride with a nationally ranked team and for the second consecutive day has nothing to show for it as the Knights fell 1-0 to #17 Wheaton College in the second round of the Cal Bergsma memorial tournament at Calvin.

In what was an extremely physical game, both teams essentially matched each other for the first 70 minutes of play. At the half both the Knights and the Warriors had seven shots, three on goal for Calvin and four on goal for Wheaton.

However, with less than 20 minutes to play, back Jonathan Liechty Jr. cheated up the field and ripped an angled shot from 35 yards out that bounced over the outstretched arms of Calvin keeper Darrin Cline (Grandville/Grandville). Cline replaced the injured Dave Fortosis (Wheaton, IL/ Wheaton Academy) for the second game in a row.

"In a game like this you have to take that risk and try a 35 yarder and see what happens," Coach Chris Hughes said. "Their 35 yarder hit the back of our net."

The best chance for the Knights came in the second half after Jared Litty (Hudsonville/Hudsonville) broke free on the left wing and rocketed a shot that Wheaton keeper Micah Lamb deflected up in the air and was then able to handle for one of his six saves. Cline recorded eight saves in the losing effort. Both teams were credited with 13 shots at goal.

Calvin couldn't capitalize on several chances throughout the game in the same way it couldn't in its 2-0 loss to #12North Park yesterday.

"We just needed a break to go our way today and yesterday," Hughes said. "We just didn't get the break. But the break these two teams got this weekend, hopefully we'll get one of those in the next couple of games."

Calvin will travel to Ohio for the Ohio Northern Tournament. They will face host Ohio Northern next Friday at 3:00pm and take on Baldwin Wallace next Saturday at 12:30pm.

"I think we learned a ton [this weekend]," Hughes said. "We learned that we can play with strong caliber teams being a young team that we are. We're creating some good opportunities, we just got to finish. Got to put the in the net. It's nice to possess the game, it's nice to have the ball, but you've got to get a break every now and then, you got to put the ball in the back of the net."
