Calvin defeats Alma

Calvin stretched its win streak to three with a 2-0 victory at Alma Saturday afternoon. All three victories in Calvin's current winning streak have been shutouts.

Calvin's victory over Alma also lifted the Knights into a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA standings with Kalamazoo and Albion as Albion handed Kalamazoo its first conference defeat of the year on Saturday, defeating the Hornets 1-0.

Calvin (5-4-1 overall, 3-1-0 MIAA) scored a goal in each half with freshman Scott Hooker (Unity Christian HS) scoring in the first half and sophomore Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) scoring in the second half. Hooker's goal came in the 32nd minute of play on a rebound shot originally struck by junior A.J. Dufendach (Forest Hills Northern HS) that deflected off the crossbar directly to the feet of Hooker. The goal by Hooker was his second of the year.

Calvin then took a 2-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 54th minute of play. The goal was Holwerda's team-leading fourth tally of the year and came on a scramble play in front of the net with Holwerda heading a shot past the Alma goalkeeper.

Calvin held a 20-5 shots at goal advantage with junior Darrin Cline (Grandville HS) collecting his third shutout victory of the year. Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Albion for a 4:00 p.m. contest in a game that will have first place implications in the MIAA.
