Calvin defeats Kalamazoo

The Knights were looking to get back on the winning track this afternoon as they hosted the Hornets of Kalamazoo. Coming off a tough 4-2 loss to Hope last Wednesday, Calvin needed this win.

Calvin did not take much time to get on the board when sophomore Dan VanSlyke (Grove City, PA/Grove City) scored his first collegiate goal within the first minute of the game off of a nice cross feed from Ben Buehrle (Wyoming/Tri-Unity Christian). Ten minutes later, Alex McKenzie (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch) added another when he took the ball from Luke Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian), faked around the goalkeeper, and knocked it just inside the right post.

But Calvin's 2-0 lead did not last long. Three minutes following Calvin's second goal, Kalamazoo got on the board via the foot of Yoshihiro Takeda. Going into halftime, the Knights held a 2-1 advantage.

As the second half unfolded, Calvin was doing its best to hold on. A couple of huge saves*one from keeper Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) and the other from teammate Zac DiPaolo (Silver Lake, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Acad.)*helped cement the victory for Calvin. Fortosis made a great diving save 15 minutes in and towards the end of the game, Fortosis left the net as the ball dribbled through but DiPaolo was there to blast it out.

Calvin added an insurance goal with just over 20 minutes in regulation from McKenzie*his second score of the game*while the assist was given to Nathan Kooi (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian).

Calvin edged the Hornets in shots leading 13-12 while Fortosis picked up three saves.

The Knights (4-5-3, 2-2-2 MIAA) will travel to Olivet on Tuesday afternoon for a 2:00 game
