Calvin dropped its second match in as many nights to a CCIW opponent, falling at pre-season CCIW favorite North Park 2-1 on Saturday night.
The host Vikings (5-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Mike Colago in the fourth minute of play. Colago then added a second half tally in the 68th minute before Calvin was able to cut the deficit in half on a penalty kick goal by senior David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with 9:52 left to play. The goal was Holwerda's team-leading fourth tally of the year.
North Park finished the match with a 19-10 shots at goal advantage including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Matt Gardner (Worthington, OH) collected seven saves for Calvin while Austin Pearson had two saves for North Park.
Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it competes at a Friday/Saturday tournament hosted by Wilmington College. Calvin will open the tournament on Friday with a game against Wittenberg and will then play the host Quakers on Saturday night.
