It took two overtime periods to decide a winner the last time Alma and Calvin battled each other. But no overtimes were needed today as the Knights showed some life on offense defeating Alma 3-0. The victory extended Calvin's win streak to three.
Calvin jumped on top six minutes in when sophomore Dan VanSlyke (Grove City, PA/Grove City) took a crossing pass from freshman Alex McKenzie (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch) and headed it into the net. The Knights did not take long to extend their lead when, less than two minutes later, McKenzie found the back of the net off of a long feed from senior Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa East). The Knights went into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
The Knights continued to apply pressure in the second half and it paid off one more time when junior Jared Litty (Hudsonville/Hudsonville) took the ball as it deflected off a defender and fired it just inside the near post. The goal was unassisted and put the Knights up 3-0.
Alma had to suppress heavy offensive pressure from the Knights all afternoon and it showed in the box score as Alma was outshot 25-1. Alma keeper James Thomson stayed busy collecting 10 saves while Calvin's keeper's Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) and Darrin Cline (Grandville/Grandville) each played a half and combined for the shutout.
Besides frequent offensive attacks by Calvin, the sound of the whistle became familiar as 44 fouls were called.
The win improved the Knights record to 6-5-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the MIAA. The next contest for the Knights will be Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. when they travel to Albion.
