Calvin defeats Olivet in Final Seconds

Box Score

Coming off an exciting and offensively charged 3-1 win over Kalamazoo last Saturday, the Knights were looking for another conference win as Olivet paid a visit to Zuidema Field this afternoon. The Knights got that win in exciting fashion and left the field with the scoreboard reading 1-0.

Neither team could find the back of the net through the majority of the game. Although Calvin had plenty of scoring opportunities outshooting Olivet 19-3, the Knights were not able to convert. Goalkeeper Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) had a pair of nice saves to keep his team in the game.

The halftime score was knotted up in a scoreless standstill and that was the way it was most of the second half. The game started getting physical as the Knights especially grew frustrated with not being able to capitalize on their chances. 34 fouls occurred in the game with one yellow card being assessed.

Finally, Calvin converted as the final seconds were ticking down. Ben Buehrle (Wyoming/Tri-Unity Christian) broke loose down the right wing and found teammate Blake VanWylen (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) streaking down the other side. VanWylen connected with the ball and ripped it just inside the left post from about twenty yards out. The clock stood at 11 seconds and the score read Calvin 1, Olivet 0.

With the win, the Knights improved their overall record and conference record to 5-5-3 and 3-2-2 respectively. Calvin now sits in sole possession of fourth place in the MIAA standings, two points ahead of fifth place Adrian and one point back of third place Kalamazoo.

Calvin's next game will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at home against Alma.
