ADRIAN - 10th-ranked Calvin narrowly escaped an upset loss Tuesday afternoon as the Knights (7-1-1 overall, 3-0-0 MIAA) claimed a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Adrian.
Calvin sophomore Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) scored his sixth goal of the year with 1:24 left in regulation to tie the score at one. Litty's goal was assisted by junior Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS).
Litty's goal sent the match into overtime. Neither team score during the first 10 minutes of overtime but in the second minute of overtime number-two, senior Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) drew a penalty kick for the Knights as he was taken down in the Adrian penalty box by a defender. Calvin senior Peter Malefyt (Lansing Christian HS) was elected to take the penalty kick and Malefyt made no mistake, burying his shot into the back of the net to give the Knights the pulse-pounding victory.
Adrian (2-6-1 overall, 0-3-0 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead on a goal Eric Drake in the 57th minute of play.
Calvin held a 28-8 shots at goal advantage in the contest but Adrian goalkeeper Ryan O'Keefe kept the host Bulldogs in the game with 13 saves. Calvin senior goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was credited with three saves in gaining the victory for the Knights.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Tri-State University for a 3:00 p.m. (EST) game.
