Calvin defeats Albion

In a key early-season MIAA contest between a pair of regionally-ranked teams, Calvin secured a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Albion.

Ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region, Albion (5-3-0 overall, 0-2-0 MIAA) jumped on Calvin early on a goal by senior Eric Johnson in the 13th minute of play. Ranked 11th nationally and second in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin (6-1-1 overall, 2-0-0 MIAA) came back with a goal by senior Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) with just 8:07 left in the first half with junior Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play. The goal was the first of the year for Cosnek who has been slowed by early-season injuries.

Albion was issued a red card late in the first half, giving Calvin a man advantage for the remainder of the game. Calvin capitalized on the opportunity as Capisciolto whipped in a shot 12 minutes into the second half for his third goal of the year. Senior Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS) picked up his team-leading seventh assist of the year on the play.

The goal by Capisciolto would prove to be the game-winner as the Knights held on down the stretch for the one-goal win.

Both teams had 10 shots at goal. Calvin senior goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had six saves and was particularly strong in the closing minutes when the Britons pressed the attack for a game-tying goal.

Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it travels to Adrian for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
