Calvin falls to Wheaton

Calvin's search for a victory over non-conference rival Wheaton College (IL) will continue.

On Saturday, the seventh-ranked Knights dropped a 2-1 decision to the visiting Thunder as Wheaton captured the championship of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament.

In Saturday's other tournament game, Hope topped John Carroll 2-0.

Wheaton (4-0-0) pounced on Calvin (3-1-0-) early, scoring just 2:04 into the first half s Tyler Hall ripped in a shot from the left wing on a semi-breakaway.

A defensive miscue by Wheaton allowed Calvin to tie the game with just 1:25 remaining in the first half however as Calvin sophomore Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) intercepted a Wheaton back-pass on the edge of the goalmouth and slipped a shot past the goalkeeper to tie the game. The goal was the second of the year for Litty.

Wheaton struck quickly in the second half though as freshman Joel DeLaas sent a chip shot from 25 yards out that got past Calvin goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) four minutes into the second half.

Calvin mustered just two shots at goal in the second half as the Wheaton defense held strong.

Wheaton finished with a 14-7 shots at goal advantage. Westra had four saves for Calvin in defeat while Ryan Souders came up with two saves for the victorious Thunder.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to the College of Wooster for a game scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. (EST).
