Calvin suffered a damaging 2-0 defeat to visiting Albion Wednesday afternoon at Marvin A. Zuidema Soccer Field. The loss drops Calvin six points behind league-leading Hope in the MIAA standings.
Ranked 18th nationally, Calvin (11-3-1 overall, 7-2-0 MIAA) came out flat in the opening minutes and the visiting Britons (9-5-1 overall, 4-4-1 MIAA) made the Knights pay, scoring two goals in the opening 13 minutes. Both goals were scored by Albion senior Eric Johnson and came just a minute-and-a-half apart.
Johnson's first goal game in the 13th minute of play as he collected a chip from teammate Chris Himes, whirled on a defender and beat Calvin senior goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a low hard shot to the short side. Just over a minute later, Johnson took a feed at the Calvin 25-yard line and blasted a shot in the top right-hand shelf with Westra having no chance on the play.
Stunned early, Calvin fought back with several shots in the final 15 minutes of the first half but did not score. Calvin came up with nine shots in the second half but continued to come up empty as the Britons did an affective job of playing keep-away with the ball for big chunks of time.
Calvin finished with a 15-8 shots at goal advantage but did not score for the first time this year. Westra had four saves in nets for the Knights while senior Tavio Palazzolo had six saves for the Britons.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Adrian at 2:00 p.m
