Calvin bounced back from a Saturday loss to rival Hope in strong fashion Tuesday afternoon as the nationally-ranked Knights came up with a 4-1 win at Kalamazoo College.
Ranked 17th in the latest NSCAA Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin (10-2-1 overall, 6-1-0 MIAA) overcame a Kalamazoo goal 36 seconds into Tuesday's match to gain the win. The Hornets (6-6-1 overall, 5-2-0 MIAA) got on the board quickly as Brett Bullard drilled in a shot from the 18-yard line off a pass from Evan Wright.
Calvin struck back with two first half goals however. Senior Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights on the board with a goal off a direct kick in the 25th minute and senior Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) followed with his second goal of the year a few minutes later with junior Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) and freshman Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) both drawing assists on the play.
Junior Nate Kooi (Lynden, WA) provided an insurance goal in the 74th minute, heading in a corner kick from Capisciolto. Sophomore Zach Kimmel (Kenowa Hills HS) then put the capper on the Calvin win with a goal in the closing two minutes with Cosnek drawing an assist.
Calvin held an 11-4 shots at goal advantage. Senior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had three saves in nets for the Knights while Stefano Crescenti had six saves for Kalamazoo.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Alma for a 2:00 p.m. match at Alma's Scotland Yard.
