Calvin defeats Cornerstone

A nationally-ranked Calvin men's soccer team remained undefeated on the young season as it improved to 3-0 with a 1-0 victory over visiting Cornerstone University in front of more than 600 fans at Calvin Field. The game's only goal came from senior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls Christian) who received a pass from junior Levi Kool (Holland Christian), made a couple moves on a defender, and blasted a shot to the upper right-hand corner that went in untouched. The unassisted goal was the first of the season for Veldhouse.

The game became a bit physical midway through the first half and continued in that manner throughout the entirety of the match. Cornerstone was charged with 27 fouls, while the Knights tallied 23 of their own, at one point committing eight straight fouls.

Cornerstone threatened to tie the score with a handful of quality scoring opportunities in the second half but the Calvin defense rose to the occasion. Junior goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the Calvin defensive stand with several clutch saves in heavy traffic.

Cornerstone won the shot battle 16-10 but Westra finished with six saves to collect his second shutout of the season and the 14th of his collegiate career.

Calvin has now won 11 consecutive games at home. The Knights will prepare for a two-game home stand this weekend as they co-host the Cal Bergsma Memorial Invitational along with Hope College. Calvin will open the tournament with a Friday match against 2002 National runner-up Otterbein College (OH) at 4:00 p.m. with Hope facing Wabash (IN) in a first round game in Holland. On Saturday, Wabash will journey to Calvin for a 2:00 p.m. contest while Otterbein will be at Hope.
