Calvin defeats Adrian

After suffering a disappointing 1-0 defeat at rival Hope Tuesday afternoon, Calvin bounced back in convincing fashion on Saturday with a 5-0 victory over the visiting Bulldogs of Adrian. Saturday's game marked the 10th shutout victory of the season for the Knights who improved to 12-1-1 overall and to 7-1-0 in the MIAA.

The Knights remain three points back of league-leading Hope which gained a 9-0 conference victory over Tri-State Saturday.

In its win over Adrian (4-8-2, 2-6-0 MIAA) Calvin scored all five of its goals in the second half with the first three goals coming in a flurry of just five-and-a-half minutes early in the second half.

Senior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) finished the match with two goals and an assist to raise his season point total to 32 points (14 goals, 4 assists). Sophomore David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a goal and an assist with sophomore Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI) and junior Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS) netting single goals.

Wright's goal completed Calvin's scoring and came on a thunderous rebound shot from the 20-yard line off a corner kick scramble. Kool's goal put the Knights on the scoreboard in the 58th minute of play and marked his first goal of the year. Kool leads the Knights in assists with eight.

Also picking up assists in the Saturday victory were senior Joel VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS).

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Albion for a 4:00 p.m. conference match.
