Calvin defeats Alma

For the first time since 1999, Calvin has claimed an MIAA men's soccer title. The Knights gained a share of the final league crown with a 2-0 victory over visiting Alma Saturday afternoon while Hope battled Albion to a 1-1 overtime tie. Calvin (10-2-0 MIAA) and Hope (9-1-2 MIAA) share the final MIAA crown with 20 points each but Hope gains the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament due to a tie-breaker edge over the Knights. 

Ranked 15th nationally heading into the week, Calvin (15-5-0 overall) still has hopes for one of the scarce at-large bids to next week's NCAA III Tournament but must wait until Sunday night when the NCAA III Tournament field is announced. 

Calvin's MIAA men's soccer title is the 16th in school history. Calvin has won more MIAA men's soccer titles than any school in league history. Kalamazoo is second with 13 league crowns to its credit. 

Calvin scored a goal in each half in its victory over Alma Saturday. Sophomore Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) put the Knights on the board with a goal in the fifth minute of play with freshman Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI) drawing an assist on the play. The same combo then hooked up the in second half with Wright converting a feed from Cosnek in the 53rd minute of play. 

Calvin finished the match with a 23-8 shots at goal advantage. Sophomore goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had five saves in posting the shutout victory while lowering his season goals-against-average to 0.80. 

The victory was Calvin's ninth shutout of the year including eighth in MIAA play. The Knights. Calvin finished the MIAA season with the league's best scoring defense, allowing just six goals in 12 conference games
