Calvin defeats Olivet

The Calvin men's soccer team notched another victory in MIAA action, downing Olivet College 2-0. The Knights rode the momentum of one first half goal to improve to 14-4 overall and 9-1 in the MIAA. The win also sets up the final week in MIAA play for Calvin as it will travel to Hope and host Alma to try to win its first MIAA title since 1999. Hope is just a point behind the Knights in the MIAA standings and could claim an outright league title of its own with victories over Calvin and Albion next week.

Calvin's victory on Saturday marked its sixth shutout victory in the last seven games. The Knights have now won 10 consecutive games including nine straight in conference play.

The Knights got on the board at the 38:54 mark with a goal from senior Geol Scheirman (Broomfield, CO/Broomfield). Scheirman beat the Olivet goalkeeper to the far post, flicking the pass from Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian) into the net with his heel. The Knights scored their second goal at the 79:16 mark as Capisciolto capitalized on a nice Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa East) pass, to give Calvin a 2-0 lead.

Calvin outshot the Comets 34-7 while Olivet's goalkeeper Will Drogt recorded 15 saves. Calvin sophomore Joe Westra recorded his eighth shutout of the season while notching two saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.

Calvin will play at Hope on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. and host Alma on Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m..
