Calvin defeats Albion

Calvin moved into a first place tie in the MIAA standings with a 2-0 victory at Albion Saturday afternoon. Ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region, the Knights improved to 12-4 overall and to 7-1-0 in the MIAA. The victory was Calvin's eighth straight win and helped make amends for a 1-0 defeat at Albion a year ago.

Calvin is now tied for first place in the MIAA standings with Kalamazoo in points (14) but the Knights have played one less conference match than the Hornets.

All of the scoring took place in the first half as sophomore Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) and junior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) scored goals. Cosnek notched his sixth goal of the year, scoring in the 21st minute unassisted to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Veldhouse then picked up his team-leading ninth goal of the year, scoring in the 28th minute on a feed from senior Mike Standfest (Elk Rapids HS).

Calvin's defense held up the rest of the way, limiting the host Britons (6-8-1 overall, 4-4-0 MIAA) to only five shots at goal on the afternoon as the Knights posted their sixth shutout victory of the year. Sophomore Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) has been in goal for all six of the shutout wins. On Saturday, Westra collected one save and lowered his season goals-against-average to 0.89.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Adrian for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
