Calvin picked up its second consecutive MIAA victory with a 4-1 win over visiting Olivet Wednesday afternoon at a rain-slicked Calvin Field.
The victory also moved the Knights within two points of league-leading Hope which fell 2-1 at Alma Wednesday. Calvin (7-4-0 overall, 3-2-0 MIAA) joins Alma and Albion with six MIAA victory points as Alma and Albion are both 3-1-0 in the league.
Calvin scored a pair of first half goals to take 2-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) scored first for the Knights as he converted a pass from freshman John VanWylen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 27th minute of play. Senior Aaron Bouw (Unity Christian HS) followed with a goal in the 31st minute, one-timing a crossing pass from sophomore Joel Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids Christian) from point-blank range.
Vande Kopple then came up with a full volley shot of his own in the 49th minute to give the Knights a 3-0 lead. The play was ignited on a perfect chip pass from the left wing by junior David Buursma (Western Michigan Christian HS).
Veldhouse chalked up his team-leading 12th goal of the year on a play in the 63rd minute as he took a perfectly placed lead pass from junior David DeBoer (Western Michigan Christian HS) and slipped a shot into the left-hand corner. The play began on a long punt from freshman goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) that allowed DeBoer and Veldhouse to break free on a two-on-one opportunity.
Olivet closed out the scoring in the 66th minute of play as Omar Hayat headed in a chip from teammate Gabe Pringle.
Calvin outshot the Comets (4-8-0 overall, 0-4-0 MIAA) 25-15 with Westra collecting five saves for the Knights while Willem Drogt had nine saves for Olivet.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Tri-State University at 1:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
