Calvin Defeats Alma

Calvin got back on the winning track with a 2-1 victory at Alma Saturday afternoon as the Knights handed the Scots their first league defeat of the year. Alma had entered Saturday's game tied for first place with Hope.

Calvin took a 1-0 halftime lead on a first half goal by sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) with freshman Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play. The goal was the 10th of the year for Veldhouse.

Alma (4-6-0 overall) came back to knot the score 1-1 on a goal by Jamie Shooks in the 66th minute of play, setting up a dramatic finish. With under five minutes left in regulation, Veldhouse sent a cross from the right wing into the Alma box. Calvin junior David DeBoer (Western Michigan Christian High School) was able to race underneath the ball and head it into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the year. The DeBoer goal came with just 4:57 left on the clock.

The Knights made the one-goal margin hold up to collect the key road win. Calvin (6-4-0 overall, 2-2-0 MIAA) outshot Alma 13-12 with freshman Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian High School) collecting six saves in goal for the Knights.

Calvin will now prepare to host Olivet Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin Field.
