WOOSTER, OH - Calvin suffered a disappointing 3-2 sudden-death overtime defeat to the College of Wooster Saturday afternoon. Calvin (5-2) outshot the host Scots (6-0-1) 23-9 and held a man advantage for a large quantity of time in the second half but came out on the short end of the scoreboard.
Calvin opened the scoring with an unassisted goal by senior Steve Bishop (Western Michigan Christian) in the 13th minute of play but Wooster countered with a goal in the 39th minute to knot the score at 1-1. In the second half, a Wooster player was whistled for his second yellow card of the match, giving the Knights a man advantage. Despite being down a player, the Scots proceeded to take a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute as sophomore Adam Milligan scored on a feed from Jon Kruse.
With just 1:17 left in regulation, Calvin was awarded a penalty kick and sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) made no mistake on the opportunity as he whipped in his team-leading sixth goal of the year. The Veldhouse goal allowed the Knights to send the contest into overtime but the sudden-death situation was again unkind for Calvin as Milligan scored a game-ending "golden goal" for Wooster in the 96th minute of play.
Over the last three years, Calvin is 1-4-1 in overtime matches.
Calvin will now prepare for an important early-season game next Wednesday when it hosts the Flying Dutchmen of Hope at 4:00 p.m. in the league opener for both teams.
