Calvin Defeats Kalamazoo

A pair of late first half goals propelled Kalamazoo to a 3-0 victory over visiting Calvin Tuesday afternoon. The victory allowed Kalamazoo (7-5-1, 4-2-0 MIAA) to remain two points behind co-MIAA leaders Alma and Hope while Calvin (8-5-0, 3-3-0 MIAA) dropped four points off the first place pace.

Kalamazoo broke a scoreless tie with goals by Jonathon Hughes and Brett Stinar in the final five minutes of the first half. The goal by Hughes came in the 41st minute while the goal by Stinar came in the 44th minute. Nick Houdek assisted on both Kalamazoo goals.

Hughes then provided the clinching goal in the 63rd minute, converting a feed from Stinar.

Kalamazoo outshot Calvin 16-4 with freshman goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) collecting 10 saves in defeat for the Knights.

Tuesday's defeat marked just the second time that Calvin has been shut out this year. It also snapped Calvin's three-game winning streak.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Hope for a 1:00 p.m. contest at the Buys Athletic Complex
