Calvin falls to Aquinas

Calvin outshot cross-town rival Aquinas 20-10 but came up on the short end of the scoreboard as the visiting Knights dropped a 1-0 non-conference decision Wednesday afternoon.

Aquinas (14-4-0 overall) scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick by Tijs VanLier 6:49 into the match, Aquinas goaltender Zach Fales then came up with eight saves for the Saints to keep Calvin (11-7-1 overall) off the scoreboard. Sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) led Calvin with four shots including three shots at goal while freshman Knoa Knapper (Clarkston) also cranked a pair of shots on goal.

Senior goaltender Justin Bouw (Unity Christian HS) picked up three saves in defeat for Calvin.

Calvin will close out its season on Saturday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 1:30 p.m. at Calvin Field. Kalamazoo can still gain a share of the MIAA title with a win over the Knights but Hope sewed up the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament Wednesday with a victory over Olivet Wednesday. Hope owns a tie-breaker edge over Kalamazoo for the automatic qualifying spot.
