Calvin defeats Olivet

Calvin exploded for six second half goals to break open a one-goal Saturday afternoon, en route to gaining a 7-0 victory over the homestanding Comets of Olivet. Calvin upped its record to 11-6-1 overall and to 6-4-1 in the MIAA with the win.

Calvin took a 1-0 halftime lead on a first half goal from junior David DeBoer (Western Michigan Christian) with freshman Levi Kool (Holland Christian) assisting on the play. Calvin struck again early in the second half on a goal by sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) with DeBoer picking up an assist. Calvin then scored three goals in a span of two minutes and 14 seconds to put the game away. Kool opened the surge by ripping in a shot from Veldhouse in the 67th minute.

Freshman Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids Christian) then popped in back-to-back goals in less than a two-minute span with Kool assisting on the first and freshman Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) assisting on the second. Senior Charles Telep (Sewickley, PA) and Cosnek then picked up goals in the final 15 minutes of play with senior Steve Bishop (Western Michigan Christian) and Telep also picking up assists.

Calvin's scoring outburst raised its overall season scoring total to 59 goals, ranking it second among MIAA teams with Hope leading the league with 60 goals on the year.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels cross-town to non-conference rival Aquinas for a 3:00 p.m. match and then closes out its season on Saturday when it hosts MIAA foe Kalamazoo in a 1:30 p.m.
