Calvin Defeats Albion

Calvin picked up its second straight victory with a 2-1 win over conference foe Albion Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field. With the win, Calvin moved into sole possession of fourth place in the MIAA standings and reached the double-digit plateau in victories for the fifth straight year and for the 26th year overall.

Calvin (10-6 overall, 5-4 MIAA) gained the win in come-from-behind fashion as Albion took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Marcus Boynton in the 28th minute of play. Calvin knotted the score at 1-1 on an Albion miscue with 8:03 left in the first half. On the play, Albion goaltender David Melotti attempted to clear the ball from the goalmouth but Melottis kick ricocheted off the back of Calvin junior Geol Scheirman (Broomfield, CO), up and over the head of Melotti and into the net.

Calvin then took control of the game in the second half, peppering Melotti with a flurry of shots and finally broke through with 9:31 left in regulation as junior David DeBoer (Western Michigan Christian HS) served a well-placed back pass to sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) at the 10-yard line. Veldhouse one-timed the DeBoer pass past Melotti and into the corner of the Albion net to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage. The goal was the 16th of the year for Veldhouse who leads the Knights and the MIAA in scoring.

Calvin held control through the remainder of the match to close out the win.

Calvin outshot Albion 18-9 with senior goaltender Justin Bouw (Unity Christian) collecting a pair of saves in goal for the Knights. Melotti had 11 saves in defeat for Albion.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Alma at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin Field
