Hope Defeats Calvin in Overtime

HOLLAND, MI - Calvin saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end as the Knights suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 sudden-death overtime loss at rival Hope Saturday afternoon. Calvin falls to 3-3-2 overall and to 1-1 in the MIAA with the loss. 

Calvin took an early 1-0 lead on a first-half goal by sophomore Jason Kastrounis (Sewickley, PA). Kastrounis was able to score in the 8th minute on a rebound shot off a punch-out by Hope's goalkeeper. Hope (7-0-1, 1-0-1 MIAA) came back with a pair of goals in the first half with Tim Kelly scoring in the 31st minute and Ed Heubner scoring in the 43rd minute. 

Trailing 2-1, Calvin battled throughout the second half was finally able to knot the score up at 2-2 on a goal by sophomore Geol Scheirman (CO) in the 83rd minute of play with sophomore Sam DeYoung (Western Michigan Christian) drawing an assist on the play. In overtime, Hope broke free for the game-winner in the 99th minute of play with Bryan Loomis scoring on a play that originally begin on a free kick from the far sideline. 

Hope finished with a 20-14 shots at goal advantage with senior Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) collecting five saves for the Knights. 

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Albion at 4:00 pm.
