Calvin Takes Down Aquinas.

Calvin stretched its unbeaten streak to four games with a 2-1 victory over non-conference rival Aquinas College Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field. In addition, the victory allowed the Knights to reach the .500 mark as they improved to 2-2-2 overall.

Aquinas controlled play in the opening minutes of the first half but the Knights switched the momentum midway through the half and broke through for the game's first goal when freshman Mike Vollmer (Grand Haven) flicked a left-footed shot past Aquinas keeper Carl Whitehouse off a pass from sophomore Sam DeYoung (Western Michigan Christian) in the 26th minute of play.

Calvin upped its lead to 2-0 on a well-scripted goal by junior Charles Telep (Sewickley, PA) in the 54th minute. Freshman Joel Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids Christian) ignited the play with a rush up the right wing and cross to the far post. Telep collected the pass in the air and slammed in the shot for his team-leading third goal of the year.

Aquinas (4-5-0) cut the deficit in half on a goal in the 66th minute as Nate Rose scored on a header in the box with Steve Dobb and Whitehouse drawing assists on the play.

Calvin held off the Saints the rest of the way however to claim the 2-1 win.

Calvin finished with a 13-12 shots at goal advantage including a 7-2 advantage in the second half. Senior Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) was again superb for Calvin in nets, collecting four saves. Whitehouse also collected four saves for Aquinas.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Adrian for a 4:00 pm MIAA contest. Wednesday's contest will be the MIAA opener for both teams
