Calvin battled nationally-ranked Wheaton to a 1-1 tie to finish in second place in the Calvin J. Bergsma Memorial Tournament. Hope took first place in the tournament as the Flying Dutchmen were victorious twice in the two-day tourney including a 3-1 win over Ohio Northern on Saturday. Calvin finished the tournament with a pair of ties while Wheaton and Ohio Northern tied for third place.
Prior to Saturday's Wheaton (2-1-2) had defeated Calvin in its nine prior meetings against the Knights. Ranked 21st nationally, Wheaton struck first, scoring in the 21st minute on header goal by Michael Rigby off a crossing pass from Nick Fichera.
Calvin began to press the attack late in the first half however and broke through in the 38th minute as sophomore Geol Scheirman (Broomfield, CO) slid a low hard shot into the far corner of the Wheaton net to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomores Marcus Decker (Grand Rapids Christian) and David Buursma (Western Michigan Christian) were both credited with assists on the play that began with Buursma moving the ball into the Wheaton box.
In the second half, Wheaton came up with the majority of the scoring opportunities but Calvin senior goaltender Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) responded with several superb saves to keep the game tied. Calvin (1-2-2) threatened in the final 30 seconds of regulation as Wheaton was called for a "hand-ball" just outsided the penalty box. Calvin's shot attempt off the re-start flew high and wide as regulation came to a close.
The game was then halted when thunderstorms pelted the area and continued storms kept the contest from going into overtime, leaving the final outcome as a tie.
Wheaton held a 23-5 shots at goal advantage but Thelen was able to come up with 10 saves.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Spring Arbor for a 4:00 pm contest.
