Calvin Battles Ohio Northern into an Overtime Tie.

Calvin battled Ohio Northern University to a 1-1 overtime tie in a first day game of the Calvin J. Bergsma Memorial Tournament Friday afternoon at Calvin Field.

Calvin (1-2-1) struck first, scoring on a goal 5:32 into the contest as junior Charles Telep (Sewickley, PA) collected a chip pass from senior Peter Knoester (Grand Rapids Christian) and slid a shot past a charging Ohio Northern goaltender and inside the near post. The Polar Bears (0-1-2) came back to tie the game on a goal in the 58th minute as Zach Wright scored on a header off a cross from Matt Ellis.

Neither team would score again in regulation, sending the contest into overtime. Calvin nearly scored a game-winning "golden goal" with two minutes left in overtime as senior David VanderLugt (Kalamazoo Christian) ripped a shot from the 30-yard line that bent over the hands of the ONU goaltender and off the far post. Calvin finished the contest with a 16-14 shots at goal advantage. Senior Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) collected five saves in goal for the Knights including a leaping deflection of a Polar Bear bullet headed for the back of the net midway through the first half.

Calvin will host Wheaton of Illinois Saturday at 2:00 pm in the second and final day of tournament play. Hope defeated Wheaton 1-0 in Friday's other tournament game. Hope will host Ohio Northern Saturday afternoon in the other tournament game.
