Calvin Reaches Another Milestone in Win Over Olivet

Calvin reached the double-digit plateau for the 25th time in school history and for the 23rd time in the last 26 years with a 3-1 triumph over visiting Olivet Saturday afternoon in front of a Parent's Day Crowd at Calvin Field.

Calvin used a come-from-behind effort to improve to 10-5-2 overall and to 7-3 in the MIAA as the Knights trailed 1-0 at halftime after the Comets (4-11 overall, 2-8 MIAA) scored on a goal by Jason Shinabarger in the 15th minute of play.

Calvin broke through for its first score on a goal by sophomore Sam DeYoung (Western Michigan Christian) in the 67th minute. DeYoung broke free up the right wing after collecting a perfectly placed lead pass from junior Charles Telep (Sewickley, PA). The goal by DeYoung was his fourth goal of the year. Sophomore Eric Krauss (Grosse Pointe) was then brought down in the Olivet penalty box after breaking free on a rush. The Olivet foul resulted in a Calvin penalty pick and Calvin sophomore Mike Standfest (Elk Rapids) took full advantage,
blasting in his fourth goal of the year on the PK.

Sophomore David DeBoer (Western Michigan Christian) provided the clinching goal moments later, accepting a lead pass from Krauss and firing in a shot just inside the far post for his second goal of the year.

Calvin outshot Olivet 24-10 and held a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks. Senior Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) and junior Justin Bouw (Unity Christian) combined on the victory in nets for Calvin with Thelen collecting four saves. The victory in goal by Thelen was the 44th of his career, ranking third on the Calvin career list.

Calvin returns to action on Monday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 3:00 pm contest to be played at the Ed Annen Sports Complex.
