Hope Takes Down Calvin

Calvin saw its four-game win streak come to an end as the Knights suffered a 2-0 defeat to rival Hope Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin dropped to 8-5-2 overall and to 5-3 in the MIAA with the defeat while Hope stretched its win streak to six games and improved to 13-1-1 overall and to 6-1-1 in the MIAA.

Both teams came up with a handful of quality scoring chances in the first half but could not capitalize as the Knights and Flying Dutchmen were scoreless at halftime. Calvin outshot Hope 7-5 in the first half and had its best scoring chance come midway through the first half as sophomore Mike Standfest (Elk Rapids) collected a served ball into the box and headed a shot past Hope
goaltender Marcus Voss that struck the underside of the crossbar, bounced straight down and was then cleared out of the box.

Hope then broke through in the 48th minute minute as Andrew Riker one-timed a cross from the left wing by Adam Chaffee into a wide-open net. Hope doubled its margin with a goal in the 59th minute as Tim Kelly was able to squirm free up the middle and blast a shot past Calvin goaltender Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) from point-blank range.

Hope finished with a 13-11 shots at goal advantage including 8-4 in the second half. Thelen collected seven saves in defeat for the Knights while Voss had four saves for Hope in gaining the shutout win.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Albion for a 1:30 pm contest.
