GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's cross country hosted its first meet of the season when it welcomed nine other teams to campus for the Knight Invite.
 
Grand Valley State took the top spot with a team score of 15 while Calvin nabbed second place with a score of 56. Spring Arbor rounded out the top three when they posted a team score of 122.
 
Senior Hailey Erickson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) led the way for the Knights when she cracked the top ten finishers with a time of 22:33.8 that was good for 10th place. Sophomore Emma Wierenga (Grafton, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) finished at 22:40.3 and took 13th place while fellow sophomore Ayla Holben (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) finished right behind in 14th at 22:40.3.
 
Junior Ellia Agar (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) was the next Knight to cross the finish line when she took 21st place with a time of 22:49.7. Junior Alexis Ball (Grand Rapids, Mich./Traverse City Central) rounded out the scoring for Calvin with a time of 23:02.6 which was enough for 24th place. 
 
Freshman Kihra Moes (South Holland, Ill./Chicago Christian) and sophomore Jonathah Bouwman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Universidad of Catolica San Pablo) also competed in the field and finished with times of 23:05.4 and 23:08.1, respectively.
 
COACHES COMMENTS: "I'm very proud of our efforts in the lead up and execution of the 6k today," said head coach Nicole Kramer. "We got out well, and our front packs over-performed against the field and particularly GVSU, who are consistent D2 national title contenders. We competed hard throughout, had fun in the process on our home course, and even had some PRs on a sloppy day, which is very difficult to do in this sport.

I'm so grateful to our Calvin community and support staff for showing up with enthusiasm and a can-do spirit today in light of the challenging conditions out there. It takes a lot to put on a meet, and even more so when it rains and storms in the early morning like it did today."
 
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, September 26th when they travel to compete in the Adrian Invite at 9:30 AM.
