The prestigious award recognizes graduating seniors who have excelled academically and athletically while demonstrating outstanding leadership in their campus and wider communities. The award honors Sheila Wallace Kovalchik, who served as MIAA Commissioner from 1991 to 2002 and was a driving force in elevating women's athletics across the conference. Bull becomes the 12th Calvin student-athlete to earn this recognition.

"I am incredibly honored to receive the Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Scholar-Athlete of the Year award," commented Bull. "This recognition reflects the people who have challenged me to grow both as a person and an athlete, and I am truly grateful for the support of my coaches, teammates, family, and friends. It's been such a privilege to represent Calvin and the MIAA, and I will always be thankful for the experiences and relationships that have shaped me over the past four years."

A native of Denver, Colorado, Bull graduated from Calvin in May 2026 with a 3.98 grade-point average while majoring in Kinesiology with a pre-physician assistant concentration. She graduated summa cum laude, was a fixture on the Dean's List throughout her collegiate career, and earned both College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District and CSC Academic All-America honors.

Bull established herself as one of the nation's premier distance runners during her career, earning All-America honors across cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field while consistently competing among the nation's elite.

During the cross country season, Bull was a three-time First Team All-MIAA selection (2023-25), a two-time First Team All-American (2024, 2025), three-time All-Region honoree, and the 2025 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year. She placed fifth individually at the 2025 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships after finishing 28th in 2024, while helping Calvin to top-25 national team finishes in both seasons.

On the indoor track & field circuit, Bull earned First Team All-MIAA honors in 2025 and 2026, captured the 2026 NCAA Division III national championship in the 3,000m run, and earned Second Team All-America honors in the 5,000m run in 2025. She was a two-time All-Region performer and claimed MIAA championships in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter events, helping Calvin place sixth nationally at the 2026 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Bull's outdoor track & field career was equally remarkable. She collected First Team All-MIAA honors in 2024, 2025, and 2026 while earning First Team All-America recognition all three seasons. She won back-to-back NCAA Division III national championships in the steeplechase in 2025 and 2026 after placing fifth nationally in 2024. Bull was also named the 2025 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year and helped Calvin finish fourth in the team standings at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Bull made a significant impact as a leader and servant within the Calvin community. She served as the Calvin cross country team captain from Fall 2024 through Spring 2026, working alongside the coaching staff to organize team events, facilitate communication, and foster a positive team culture. She also represented the Knights on the Calvin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during the 2025-26 academic year and was a member of the Calvin Track Leadership Council, helping identify ways to strengthen the program while participating in weekly leadership discussions. Additionally, Bull served as a Bible study leader during the 2024-25 academic year, leading weekly discussions that encouraged spiritual growth and thoughtful conversation.

Bull dedicated herself to serving others through numerous community engagement opportunities. She volunteered with the GlamourGals Foundation, connecting with seniors in retirement homes, and with Special Olympics, working with basketball athletes during the 2026 season. She also volunteered with CranHill Ranch, Hope Fellowship Church's food bank ministry, and the "What's Your Everest" program through No Barriers, assisting disabled veterans. Professionally, Bull gained valuable healthcare experience as both a medical assistant and patient service specialist, further preparing her for a future career as a physician assistant.

With exceptional accomplishments in the classroom, on the course and track, and in service to others, Bull leaves Calvin as one of the most accomplished student-athletes in program history and a deserving recipient of the Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

Her extraordinary accomplishments in academics and athletics are matched by her commitment to leadership, service, and supporting those around her. Sophie exemplifies the legacy of Sheila Wallace Kovalchik, and we are proud to recognize her as this year's recipient of one of the MIAA's highest individual honors."
