A pair of Calvin University graduates claimed 10K titles this past Saturday during the annual Amway River Bank Run activities in Grand Rapids. The annual River Bank run features a 25K road race but also includes shorter runs during the day including the Fox/Subaru 10K race.
2025 Calvin graduate
Luke Witvliet was the winner of the men's 10K race while 2013 Calvin graduate Alyssa (Penning) McElheny was the winner of the women's 10K race.
Both races featured 1-2 finishes by Calvin alumni. In the men's race, Witvliet took first in a time of 31:30.77. Addison Smith, a 2020 Calvin University graduate took second in 32:12.30.
On the women's side, McElheny took first in 34:00.44 with 2025 Calvin graduate
Jenna Allman taking second in 35:19.
Witvliet was Calvin's 2025 Co-recipient of the Bere' Memorial Student-Athlete Award. He was an NCAA III Indoor All-American in the 5,000 meter run (2025) and participated in NCAA III Championships in cross country and track and field throughout his career. He is currently a medical student at Michigan State University.

At Calvin, McElheny was a standout distance runner, earning All-MIAA First Team cross country honors in 2010, 2011 and 2012. As a freshman in 2009, she was part of a Calvin women's cross country team that took third at the NCAA III Championships. She made her biggest mark in outdoor track and field, claiming NCAA III All-America honors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, placing fifth in the race at the 2012 national meet. She was a two-time MIAA steeplechase champion and a two-time All-MIAA (outdoor) track and field honoree.
This past fall, she qualified for the 2028 U.S Olympic Marathon trials. She is also actively involved in
Hyrox competitions.
Her husband Daniel McElheny is also a former Calvin cross country and track and field athlete. The McElheny family resides in Belding, Michigan.
