DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Calvin University baseball team splits its doubleheader with Clarkson University on Thursday at Northeast Regional Park.
Calvin (6-6) won game one 2-0 before Clarkson (4-3) won game two 9-4.
Game 1
Calvin got a shutout from starting pitcher
Noah Etnyre (Northville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and a home run from
Landen Mikula (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns) to win a quick-moving game one 2-0.
Etnyre (1-0) was the story for the Knights on the mound, pitching all seven innings and allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out six to record Calvin's first complete game shutout of the season.
Both pitchers were on task early as the game remained scoreless through three innings before the Knights finally broke the tie in the fourth. Mikula started the rally with a one-out single and tagged up on a long foul ball flyout to advance to second base with two outs, where he scored on a two-out single by
Landon Evans (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
After several hard hit balls over the next two innings were knocked down by a strong wind blowing in, Mikula muscled a home run to left field in the sixth inning to push the Knights' lead to 2-0.
Etnyre allowed a one-out double in the bottom half of the sixth inning, the first hit he had allowed since the opening frame, but struck out the next two batters and then retired the Clarkson side in order in the seventh to preserve the 2-0 win.
Game 2
Clarkson started strong with nine early runs and held the Knights' offense in check until the final innings on the way to a 9-4 game-two win to secure the split.
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Knights scored three times in the second inning and then added six more in the third to take a 9-0 lead. Clarkson's three runs in the second came on only one hit thanks to three walks, and the six runs in the third came on four hits, one walk and two hit batters.
Dylan Caracci (Aurora, Ill./Oswego East) held the Golden Knights scoreless over the final four innings, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
Calvin scored its four runs over the final three innings, led by RBI-singles from
Mason Stryker (Anchor Bay, Mich./Anchor Bay) and
Gabe Jeffries (Freeport, Mich./South Christian), followed by an RBI-double from
Christian Stevens (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) and a sacrifice fly by
Brock Savage (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights Stevenson).
Fletcher Bandstra (Schererville, Ind./Illiana Christian) fell to 0-1 after allowing six runs on two hits and four walks in two-plus innings. Caracci allowed three runs on four hits while striking out five in five innings of relief.
Calvin finished the game with nine hits, with nine different players recording one hit apiece.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Really happy with how we played in game one," Calvin head coach
Joel Schipper said. "
Noah Etnyre pitched great and I thought we battled through some tough conditions where some really good at bats and swings weren't rewarded to still scratch across two runs and get the win. Disappointed that we didn't really give ourselves much of a chance in game two. Looking forward to two more games tomorrow against a really good Ohio Northern team."
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action tomorrow (Friday, March 13) when it faces Ohio Northern University in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 10:00 AM at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.
