GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The Calvin ACHA D3 hockey team defeated Aquinas College, 5-1, in its first game of the MCHC Vezina Cup Tournament.
Ranked No. 1 in the country, Calvin is now 17-3-1 and ranked first in the nation.
Josiah Lambers scored the only goal of the first period with 10:48 to play. His goal was unassisted.
Bryce Bowling scored for Aquinas with 11:15 to play in the 2nd period from Luke McNabnay on a power play. Calvin regained the lead with 9:48 with a goal by
Joel Dieleman, and an assist by
Owen Duiker.
Gabriel Sova increased Calvin's lead to 3 with 7:59 remaining. From
Harry Ottsen and
Tomas Postal. Calvin added on to its lead in the 3rd with a pair of early goals
Nathan Sova scored with 17:55 to play from
Oleg Grishatov, and
Zach Westrick. Josh VanShepen put Calvin up 5-1 with 17:41 to play from
Brock Hearth allowing Calvin to coast the rest of the way to victory.
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Austin Huizenga, "Credit to Aquinas. They were playing some really good hockey coming into this game. We were able to slow their offense and generate offense ourselves. We had key saves from Worz tonight at really critical moments. We're looking forward to playing in Vezina Cup semi finals against and a good east side team."
NEXT UP: Calvin Plays The University of Michigan Ann Arbor on Friday, February 27th, at 7:30 p.m. The MCHC Vezina Cup semifinal game will be at Patterson Ice Center.
